UnivNote study guide · Updated October 3, 2026
Your textbook says page 42.
Your PDF means page 48.
Covers, contents pages and prefaces can put your PDF counter a few pages ahead of the number printed on the page. Find the offset once, then use the page numbers your class is using.
Find the right PDF page
Choose a page where you can see both its position in the PDF file and its printed number. Then enter the printed page you want to reach.
42 + (7 − 1) = 48
No upload needed. Your entries stay in this browser. Use positive whole numbers for one continuous sequence of printed pages.
Why the two numbers differ
The PDF position counts pages from the beginning, including the cover. A book might start its main text at printed page 1 after six pages of front matter. In that case, printed page 1 is the seventh PDF page. The difference is six, so printed page 42 is PDF page 48.
Some PDFs also contain page labels, such as iv or 1. Those labels are different from the page's position in the file and from the number drawn or scanned onto the page. For the calculator, use the file position counted from 1.
Match the numbers in UnivNote on iPad
UnivNote lets you assign a displayed number to a chosen page. For a textbook whose main text begins on the seventh PDF page:
- Open the PDF and navigate to the page with the printed number 1.
- Touch and hold the reader's page-number control, then choose Set This Page’s Number.
- Enter 1 and tap the checkmark. The number-setting sheet also shows the page's original PDF position so you can check you selected the right page.
- Tap the page-number control and enter 42. With this example's numbering, it takes you to the 48th PDF page, where printed page 42 should be.
To undo the numbering adjustment, touch and hold the page-number control and choose Reset Page Numbering.
Check the limits before you use an offset
A single offset works when every printed page corresponds to one PDF page and the numbering stays continuous. Check another page near the end of the section before relying on it.
- Missing or duplicated scans: the offset changes after the gap. Renumbering cannot restore missing content.
- Two book pages in one scan: one printed page no longer equals one PDF page. This calculator's formula does not apply.
- Roman numerals or a numbering restart: treat the preface, main text and appendices as separate sequences when checking positions. This calculator accepts numeric pages, not Roman labels.
Do I have to delete the cover or contents pages?
No. Changing the displayed numbering in UnivNote does not remove or rearrange pages. You can keep the front matter and still align the displayed number with the book.
Does this move my handwriting or links?
The numbering setting changes user-facing numbers. It does not move your handwriting or change the physical page order.
Will the new numbers appear in every other PDF app?
This guide describes numbering within UnivNote. Do not assume another app or an exported file will use that same numbering. Check the document in the destination app before sharing page references.
Keep studying on the page.
UnivNote also lets you add margin space and hide handwritten solutions on a separate layer. Start with up to 20 notes free.
